An introduction to Psacharopoulos House

How would you describe Psacharopoulos House in a nutshell

On the beautiful island of Sifnos this villa rental, Psacharopoulos House, is in the perfect location for a charming vacation in the Greek Cyclades. Off the beaten track and much more a place for artists and intellectuals rather than the standard tourist, it is truly a glorious lodging on an unique island. This five-bedroom neoclassical mansion has space for up to eight guests, with bedrooms on two storeys and surrounded by charming gardens.

Please tell me a bit about the history of Psacharopoulos House.

Psacharopoulos House was built in the middle of the 19th century by the Psacharopoulos family. The members of the family owned the Pan Hellenic Shipping Company that connected many of Europe’s famous trading ports. Now in its 6th generation, the house was originally built as a place of gathering for all the members of the family who were scattered around the world.

For the construction, the family used the skills of both local and foreign workmen while the building materials were transported on the ships that belonged to the family.

How would you describe the style of the building?

Psacharopoulos House is a 19th century house which combines the neoclassical elements with the local architecture. Not more than five houses in Sifnos have this style. We have not changed anything over the years, so when you go inside the house it is as if traveling back in time a bit. You can feel the history of the house. We have done a lot of work on it over the years — probably 70% of the house has passed through my hands over time — it is our baby.
For example, if something breaks sometimes takes two or three months to find that special item or material in order to replace or repair it. We have only added three new bathrooms.

What is the biggest reward when you share your house with other people?

We have met many interesting people who really appreciate and share with us the atmosphere of Psacharopoulos House. We feel very happy and content when they enjoy their holiday and feel relaxed in our home.

To you personally, what is so special about Psacharopoulos House?

Psacharopoulos House holds a life of its own. It is created by the people who lived there and their histories. Some of them were famous, other were not, but all of them loved it and cherished it and you can still feel it if you stay there for a while.

The house combines neoclassical elements with local architecture. Not more than five houses in Sifnos have this style. We have not changed anything over the years, so when you go inside the house it is as if traveling back in time a bit. You can feel the history of the property. The furniture has been with the family for many years as well. In fact we still have shipping documents of individual pieces from more than 100 years ago, so it really does keep the atmosphere of the past.

Sifnos is a small island in the Aegean Sea. It is part of the Cyclades islands. The island attracts a lot of artists and intellectuals who appreciate the island, the traditional lifestyle of the locals, the good food and the beautiful landscape. The architecture on the island is very typical for the Cyclades – little white houses with blue windows and doors. A few bigger and in different style as our home, small villages, more than 365 churches and the sea dominant all around.

There are many paths that lead you to beautiful hills and some very old churches. While walking you can discover a secret island. You can visit ancient Greek ruins and the Acropolis of St. Andrew.

There are some historic areas like the small town of Kastro (castle) overlooking the Aegean Sea. It is very rich in antiquities and as you walk you can see pillars and gems of ancient tombs that have been used as special elements in the buildings.

You should also visit the traditional pottery shops. And you can go to the traditional fairs where the locals will offer you food and wine and you will dance with their music.

The location of Psacharopoulos House

Psacharopoulos House is located on the edge of Artemonas, a traditional and un-spoiled village that since the 1950’s has been protected from further change by the Greek law. Whilst it’s secluded and quiet, it is also easy to reach the ‘tavernas’ and ‘kafeneias’ (coffee shops) of Artemonas in less than a five-minute walk. In another ten mins on foot or less than 1km by car is the center of the island, Apollonia, with bars, restaurants and small shops selling arts and crafts. The beaches of the island, such as Platis Yialos, Chrisopigi, Vathi and Faros, famous for their clear blue waters can also be reached in less than fifteen mins by car or bus.

When is the best time to visit Cyclades?

Every period in Sifnos is different. May, June and most of July are peaceful. The days are long, and you can enjoy the sea. You can have dinner at small taverns and you can walk if you want to discover the island. August is more crowded and the night life is in high gear.

To get to the island is quite easy. In the summer months there are usually five calls per day from Piraeus (the main port of Athens), to Sifnos. Some of them are high-speed vessels.
