— Please tell us a little about the history of the house.

Marie: “About five years ago we arrived here in the region to look for a big house to renovate. This house is the old rectory of the village. When we first saw it, we knew it was the place. It has lots of charm and a lot of space.

When we started renovating, we tried to keep all the rooms more or less like they were. We really wanted to respect the style of the house. We made five rooms on the first floor and a very big common room on the ground floor, as well as an apartment for our family.

There weren’t any chimneys in the house, so we built two. We also had to put in six bathrooms as there weren’t any in the house. With the space available, we were able to build big bathrooms with tubs and showers.”

— What made you fall in love with this house?

Marie: “We were really looking for an old place. I’m really fond of old houses. We wanted to recreate the atmosphere of an old building, to give it life again.

What’s charming about this house is that it’s in the middle of the village, so we have the atmosphere and the advantages of living in a village. The house also has a cute garden — I really love plants. They create a warm atmosphere for the hotel. We opened more windows to the garden so holiday guests can see it better.”

— What was your inspiration to start this holiday rental?

Marie: “It has been a dream of mine for a long time. Sebastian was running a restaurant in Paris when we met, and I was just finishing my studies. We wanted to make a project together and leave France in order to be able to get to know a new culture. We were very attracted by Spain because it wasn’t so far from home and we both spoke some Spanish.

Then we fell in love with Catalonia and the Costa Brava. We were very lucky to find this place.”

— How would you describe the style of the rental?

Marie: “That’s difficult. I suppose the style is a mix of all of our travels around the world — it is very personal. When we started to decorate a room, we wanted each one to be different, but all of them make our holiday guests feel relaxed and at home.

Many details of the house are influenced by Morocco, for example the tiles on the ground floor. As for the rooms, the colors are based on the type of furniture we put in them. We have an eclectic mix of furniture from many different places.”

— Please tell us a bit about the rooms and facilities.

Marie: “Upstairs there are five bedrooms and a common room — a ‘rest’ room with a fireplace. Downstairs we have the entrance which is quite big and a common room. Then there is another room down there with a bar.”

— Looking back, what has been the biggest reward to you personally about running Casa Rural?

Marie: “Probably to make all this. When we started to renovate the house, many people in our family were thinking we were crazy. The first pleasure was finishing the house. But now I would say the biggest reward is to see our guests leaving happy after their holidays. That’s really the best gift.

The house makes them feel relaxed. This opens up a new relationship with customers. It’s not like in a regular hotel where people come to stay and you don’t even see them. We try to respect the independence of each guest, but we are here for them when they need us.”
