Artist Residence Grand Suite - Artist Residence, in London, United Kingdom
— Charlie: “One of the biggest rewards for me is being awarded things like London Hotel of the Year. Justin and I put so much heart and soul into our hotel that it’s really nice to see it being appreciated!”

— How would you describe the hotel in a nutshell?

Charlie: “Artist Residence is a small 10-bedroom boutique townhouse-like hotel in Pimlico, London. It feels like you’re staying in a home away from home but with the amenities of a luxury hotel.”

— What was your inspiration to open a small hotel in London?

Charlie: “We started off in Brighton and then went to Cornwall, but London is a very big city and as there are mostly large and grand hotels, we wanted to offer something completely different with homey touches and personal service. Artist Residence opened in September of 2014 and has been really successful since then.

We were recently awarded the Cesar Award from the Good Hotel Guide, are listed in the 100 Best British Hotels category, and also won a style award. Even though we mostly relied on word of mouth, we have had some really great press. It is wonderful to see that the word is being spread.”

— How would you describe the atmosphere and interior design of Artist Residence?

Charlie: “Our ideal was to provide very warm and friendly service, yet at the same time promoting professionalism and efficiency. The atmosphere of Artist Residence doesn’t feel corporate, but much more charming.

Justin and I did all of the design by ourselves. Since we’re always traveling between Brighton, London and Cornwall, we often pick up antique, individual pieces along the way. These special pieces bring a very personal touch to the hotel.”

— Please tell us about the rooms and facilities at Artist Residence.

Charlie: “All of the bedrooms are designed in a very eclectic style with industrial antique and vintage furnishings and vintage prints. The rooms have air conditioning, free WiFi, powerful rain showers, luxurious bathroom fittings, and staff on-site to help out with any guest needs.

My favorite room is the Loft, which is at the top of the hotel with really beautiful high ceilings. With an open-plan bathroom, it feels like being in a wood-type cabin but in the middle of the city. It has luxurious emerald green armchairs with a beautiful Art Deco style bath and marble basin. Its rustic and industrial touches add to its a luxurious feel.

There is a restaurant for our holiday guests as well, which is on the ground floor with a small seating area facing the road. There’s also a ping-pong room that doubles as a meeting room and private dining room, which adjoins the club room with its big comfy sofas and armchairs facing the fire. Furthermore, there’s also a bar in the basement.”

— What do you generally serve at The Cambridge Street Kitchen?

Charlie: “At breakfast, we offer cold-pressed juices, smoothies, and coffee, as well as baked pastries from our local suppliers alongside hot dishes such as a Full English Breakfast and Eggs Benedict. Brunch is served on weekends with dishes like avocado and poached egg on toasted rye bread with chili.

The restaurant has a very nice, light and airy feel to it with an open plan kitchen and a big copper roll-top bar. Guests can sit on the comfy banquets at the front or back, or they can sit on the bar stools and observe our chef preparing all the dishes.

Our evening menu changes on a monthly basis. The dishes we serve then have a more bistro-type feel, concentrating on British seasonal produce. We have exciting specials, such as game dishes during the season. Our Sunday roast is exceptional as well.”

— To you personally what’s so special about a holiday break at Artist Residence?

Charlie: “I like the warm and friendly check-in and how the rooms are individually designed. The art and design details play a really big part, with quirky parts everywhere, keeping the eye interested. But the all around experience of the restaurant, the lounge and the rooms and location make it a great bolthole in a busy city like London.”
