Interview By:

— How would you describe Ten Inverness Way B&B in a few words?

Jenna and Kai: “Our goal is to be more of a contemporary, rather than a typical grandma’s Bed and Breakfast. We try to appeal to every age group, providing a good quality experience at a reasonable price in beautiful surroundings on Tomales Bay near Inverness, within the Point Reyes National Seashore. We’re located just an hour’s drive north of San Francisco in Marin County, California.”

— How would you describe the Inn?

Jenna and Kai: “The house was built in 1904, probably to serve as a vacation home for a professor at Berkley University. It hadn’t had any new life breathed into it for a long time so that we pretty much refurnished the entire place.

For the most part we try to keep it simple and uncluttered. Before there used to be a lot of knickknacks that made things look too busy.

The rooms are mostly white with light colors. We have big, fluffy beds. Everything in the house is good quality but simple. We don’t buy something just because it’s the most affordable and it takes us some time to pick things out.”

— Please tell us more about the rooms at the Inn, and do you have a favourite?

Jenna and Kai: “There are five rooms at Ten Inverness Way. Our biggest and brightest room, the sky room is probably my favorite. It faces the east side of the house with two skylights over the bed, which is really nice when it rains. It has a window seat and a bathtub.

The most affordable room is next to the kitchen on the first floor called the Reader’s Retreat, has the most recently renovated bathroom and a claw foot tub. It doesn’t have any chairs and is the smallest room. People sometimes just leave the door open to the living room and make that whole floor their own.

We also offer the entire house for a total of 10 guests as a kind of luxury vacation home rental at a reduced rate. They can use the kitchen as well, but without housekeeping or breakfast. It is available for rent for any length of time. Amenities can be included at an extra cost.”

— What other facilities and services are available to your vacation guests?

Jenna and Kai: “Our main focus here is food. We make everything we can from scratch such as all the pastries and breads. There is a full breakfast in the morning, as well as pastries, local cheeses and wine in the afternoon, but we don’t serve dinner.

Also, to help with any recommendations like the best trails for hiking, or for organizing activities or reservations for restaurants we are available until about 6pm every evening.”

— In your opinion, what’s so special about staying at Ten Inverness Way?

Jenna and Kai: “Our location is special. When you travel up the coast of California from San Francisco or Los Angeles, there are some really tourist-type spots that are packed with chain restaurants and gift shops, whereas the local people who have grown up and lived in this area around Inverness and the Point Reyes National Seashore have done a good job at keeping it the way it’s always been, so there’s more of a unique experience with organic farms and unique shops and businesses.

We try to keep the integrity of the place when it comes to the Bed and Breakfast. The whole experience is of good quality.”
