An introduction to Tainaron Blue Retreat

How would you describe Tainaron Blue Retreat in a nutshell?

Tainaron Blue Retreat is a small boutique hotel with three suites in an early 19th century fortified Mani tower. Overlooking the coastline of Cape Tainaron in Greece, Tainaron Blue is a perfect hideaway, a place to rest and think and to be close to nature.

What is the history of the tower and what was your inspiration to turn it into a small hotel?

The tower used to be a watchtower to protect a nearby settlement and watch out for pirates and such. Historically, when neighbours didn’t get along, they would move and then set up their own smaller settlements, this one in particular had its own church, square and cemetery.

When we visited this part of Greece for the first time about 20 years ago, we decided to buy the tower for our family, thinking that it would be nice to host friends there. Soon we realised that it would be just wonderful to share this experience of living in a fortified watchtower with more people and therefore decided to turn it into a small luxury hotel.

How would you describe the atmosphere inside the Mani tower?

We didn’t want Tainaron Blue to look like a museum. Instead we wanted to offer a luxurious environment for our vacation guests and decided to mix the traditional structure with modern design and all the comforts of our time. This together with the stonewalls makes for a serene atmosphere.

To you personally, what is so special about staying at Tainaron Blue?

The uniqueness of the place is what makes it so special. The view from the tower is incredible and you can see the sea, the beaches, and the isolated ruins around the tower. At night the cruise boats coming from the eastern Mediterranean are visible, which look like moving buildings. That is quite spectacular to watch.

How long do you recommend to stay at the hotel?

Most of our vacation guests stay for about three days or longer. We have a minimum stay of two days and are open for six months, from May 1st through the 31st of October.

What’s been the biggest reward about running Tainaron Blue?

Our biggest reward has been the feedback we are receiving form our guests. It is such a wonderful feeling to know that people from all around the world enjoy this place as much as we do.

An intimate restaurant is open to hotel guests exclusively, offering an authentic Maniot culinary experience during their stay. The rich culture of our region serves as an inspiration for Chef George Samoilis to create a fine menu based on organic, local ingredients and traditional recipes. He transforms the inspiration into a magical gastronomical journey full of flavour, aromas and Greece, with the assistance of sous-chef Nata. This year we gathered olives from our olive groves and produced the season’s fresh extra virgin olive oil. The menu, also, features a variety of Greek wines that best complement the local cuisine.

Breakfast and meals are served on the patio by the pool or on the wooden deck of the veranda with spectacular views of the Mediterranean Sea. We feature a modern hydrotherapy pool outdoors and while guests having lunch on the patio, they can even watch swallows drinking from the pool late in the afternoon. We put day beds and sun lounges under the trees to offer natural shade in the hot summer months.

Enjoy a ’degustation-type’ breakfast with inviting Greek delicacies, which will surely make you wish breakfast could last the whole day! Here in Tainaron blue, we absolutely love special and unique breakfast experiences, that can become an integral part of any trip and invest a lot in providing the best possible kick-off every single day to all of our guests. So, we have created an authentic Greek breakfast experience, where traditional flavors will blast into your mouth as you try hotel's sumptuous meal.

Breakfast is served daily from 9.30 a.m. until 12.30 p.m. We’re very flexible with that. Since breakfast is served after 9.30 a.m., the early birds can enjoy complimentary morning coffee using the Nespresso machines available in all rooms!

The various courses are not all served at once, but come in rounds one by one. This is the reason why many past guests referred to it as a ’degustation’ breakfast. As for the drinks, you can go for a wide variety of both hot and cold beverages to accompany your breakfast, ranging from detox types of tea and fresh orange juice to a diversified selection of coffee. Special props to the organic pomegranate juice straight from the owners’ pomegranate-growing fields.

Delectable food is even better when enjoyed in a nice setting. Gaze at the hundreds shades of blue of the sea blending with the endless blue of the Greek sky, and live a breakfast experience you will never forget!

All of our rooms have a desk and good WiFi included in rate.

Things to do in Peloponnese & Vathia

  • Art / Culture
  • Hiking
  • Cycling
  • Horseback riding
  • Boat trips

Most of our vacation guests usually come here to be by themselves and just relax. However, there are plenty of things to do for guests who do want to venture out. Bars and restaurants are nearby and can be reached by car. The beaches in Mani are mostly pebble beaches. The only sandy beaches are located 2km away in Marmari village, across our property. The coast here has crystal turquoise waters and going for a swim is just fantastic.

I would also recommend a visit to the old town of Areopolis or Limeni (the seaport of Areopolis), one of the most picturesque seaside settlements in Greece. Another must see are the Diros caves, which is one of the biggest underwater formation of caves in the world. Many of our guests also enjoy wandering around the ruins of the old villages in the area (Vathia is the most photographed, while other options are the secluded villages Mountanistika, Leontaki, Pepo).

Another wonderful experience, preferably at sunset, is a visit to the Tainaron lighthouse, the southernmost tip of Europe. You wander through the archaeological site of Tainaron where the Temple of Poseidon and Oracle used to be and then continue to the lighthouse in an easy 40 minute hike. Hiking is wonderful in this area; there are beautiful old trails and we offer our guests maps that indicate the most beautiful old paths

And two of our highlights: the tour by car of the Mani peninsula is beautiful, captivating and takes, approximately, two hours. And the boat cruise is just unforgettable!

The location of Tainaron Blue Retreat

Tainaron Blue Retreat is located on southernmost point of mainland Greece, which at the same time is the southernmost point of mainland Europe. I would compare the immediate surroundings of Tainaron Blue to a stone village in Sicily or the highlands of Scotland.

We are 125 kilometers from Kalamata airport, which is about a two-and-a-half hour drive that takes you through quaint villages in the west part of Mani. Athens airport is 340 kilometers from here, which is about 4 hours by car.

The acropolis of Mani is Vathia village, which is two kilometers away. And Limeni village, which is 40 kilometers from here, is one of the most beautiful villages by the sea in Greece. The capital of the region is Areopoli and has a very nice stone road, bars and restaurants and lots of activities people like to do at night. Aeropoli is 35 kilometers away from us.

When is the best time to visit Peloponnese?

Guests from Northern Europe usually enjoy coming here when it is not too crowded. Since July and August are our busiest months, I would recommend coming from June until the 20th of July, and then again in September through October. The weather is nice then and you can still experience swimming without the places being overly crowded.
