— Please tell us about the history of Schneiderei Schoppernau.

Albert: “This is a house full of history which was renovated in 2013-14. To me it was very important to maintain the link to the past by making sure the original structure was kept intact and visible – more than it had been before the renovation.

As a homage to the history of Schneiderei Schoppernau as a former tailoring shop, we used traditional loden cloth in combination with the wood in many places around the house. This not only creates a homely atmosphere but provides for good acoustics too.”

— Why did you decide to renovate and rent out Schneiderei Schoppernau to holiday guests?

Albert: “The Schneiderei used to be my grandparents’ home where I spent a lot of my childhood. When the house was handed over to me it was clear that I did not want to have it torn down or replaced by another house. Instead I was going to renovate it. Its size and atmosphere make it an ideal holiday home.

As an architect I was able to plan, oversee and execute much of the actual renovation. The interior construction including the wash basins, kitchen, and day rooms were all planed by us. However, there is one part of the house that remains exactly as it was before the renovation – the old living room. It is truly original.”

— What about the renovation process did you enjoy the most?

Albert: “Working on it with my own hands. As an architect that involves planning and execution. My family and I worked a lot on this house, mostly in the evenings and on weekends. It was an intensive yet wonderful year. We were able to be a part of the whole process – clearing out, demolition and then reassembly. It is a great feeling to know every single piece of a house.”

— How would you describe the holiday house?

Albert: “Schneiderei Schoppernau is a holiday home with enough space for up to 10 guests. The kitchen and adjacent dining area are on the ground floor, which was the former workshop and exhibition space. It is a spacious room, my personal favourite in the entire house. There is a freestanding kitchen block where five to six people can cook together. On the same level we have one of our five double bedrooms. There is also a room with two showers. The traditional common room is on the first floor. It is smaller and cosier than the bigger dining room. Two more bedrooms and an extra room for all uses are on the same level. On the top floor there are two bedrooms and a bathroom with a bathtub. The basement offers a heated storeroom for ski equipment.”

— What about the atmosphere of the house?

Albert: “The atmosphere of the house with its wood, proportions and the lighting, is very cosy. Many people who come to the house for the first time feel at home right away.

Everyone who has stayed with us on holidays so far absolutely loved it and several guests have already pre-booked again for next year.”

— What kind of services do you offer for your guests?

Albert: “My family lives right next door, so we can offer any kind of assistance if it is needed. My father is a licensed ski instructor who can answer all questions about mountain treks or ski tours. We also know the farmers in the area and can advise you where to get any food your heart may desire. Generally however, this house is equipped as a self-catering house. We supply all the essentials so that you’ll feel right at home.

This project isn’t done yet though, it is still growing. Next year I might build a sauna in the basement and there a few more ideas I would like to turn into reality.”
