— Nicos: “You can feel the history of the house. We have done a lot of work on it over the years — probably 70% of the house has passed through my hands over time — it is our baby.”
Interview By:

— Please tell me a bit about the history of Psacharopoulos House.

Nicos: “Psacharopoulos House was built in the middle of the 19th century by the Psacharopoulos family. The members of the family owned the Pan Hellenic Shipping Company that connected many of Europe’s famous trading ports. Now in its 6th generation, the house was originally built as a place of gathering for all the members of the family who were scattered around the world.

For the construction, the family used the skills of both local and foreign workmen while the building materials were transported on the ships that belonged to the family.”

— How would you describe the style of the building?

Nicos: “Psacharopoulos House is a 19th century house which combines the neoclassical elements with the local architecture. Not more than five houses in Sifnos have this style. We have not changed anything over the years, so when you go inside the house it is as if traveling back in time a bit. You can feel the history of the house. We have done a lot of work on it over the years — probably 70% of the house has passed through my hands over time — it is our baby.
For example, if something breaks sometimes takes two or three months to find that special item or material in order to replace or repair it. We have only added three new bathrooms.”
