An introduction to Mirror Houses

How would you describe Mirror Houses in a nutshell?

Mirror Houses are two luxury holiday homes in South Tyrol in Italy; it’s modern architecture surrounded by apple trees and set into the incredible landscape of the Dolomites.

What was your inspiration to create Mirror Houses?

The idea to create Mirror Houses came from my mother who used to be an interior designer. Eventually she decided that she wanted to build special houses as holiday homes. Since Mirror Houses were going to be located on my parent’s property, they wanted them to be somewhat separate and really liked Peter Pichler’s idea of using a mirror. We collaborated with him, so that the houses would have their own entrance and would be completely separate from my parents’ house.

Was it your idea from the beginning to create such contemporary buildings?

Yes, we wanted to build something special. Generally, nowadays a lot of people prefer renting holiday apartments or holiday houses instead of staying in hotels. Our idea was to create something beyond the ordinary. I guess that you could say we succeeded in doing so, as there are even locals who find it hard to believe that these houses exist in this location. They are amazed when they visit the place.

To you personally, what’s so special about the whole experience of staying at Mirror Houses?

It is very special to me is that even though you are pretty close to everything, you still feel completely immersed in nature. I don’t like big hotels where everything is standardized and think it’s nicer to stay in a calmer place. Here you can stay in a luxurious house with your own garden, cook your food, have a glass of wine and sleep in a really comfortable bed. It’s a high quality life.

Mirror Houses rooms & rates

The feeling you get of the place differs greatly depending on whether you look at it from the owner’s house or when entering from the east side as a guest. The side facing the owner’s house is all mirrors, so that it looks like the garden is much bigger.

The houses are separated by a green garden wall and are slightly elevated to provide a better view. The front of the houses is a glass façade that can be opened up completely so that the terrace and living room become one open space. The whole house is basically an open space with a bedroom, which has sliding doors that can be pushed into the walls. There’s also a bathroom, and living room with a full kitchen that opens up to the balcony. The living room couch can be made into a bed if you have children.

A lot of thought went into the sheets, beds, and décor. There are windows directly above the bed so you almost feel as if you’re sleeping outside, as one with nature. It’s very quiet, even though the location is close to the highway and industrial zone. Everyone is amazed at how much you feel immersed into nature.

Things to do in South Tyrol & Bolzano

  • Art / Culture
  • Wine tastings
  • Yoga classes
  • Golf
  • Skiing
  • Hiking
  • Cycling
  • Horseback riding

Bolzano’s center is just a bit bigger than all the other cities around. There are plenty of nice restaurants, stores, museums and other things to visit. At Mirror Houses you are close to everything.

There are also several ski resorts close by, which are only between 30 mins to one hour away, such as Obereggen, Passo di Costalunga/Karerpass, as well as Boscoriva/Reinswald. If you want to visit any other cities besides Bolzano, Merano, Trento and Cortina d’Ampezzo are close by.

For those of our holiday guests who want to stay active during their stay, there are lots of options such as hiking, climbing, cycling and going for a swim in the lakes. We are currently working on connecting with a yoga teacher so that we can organize private sessions.

We can also recommend visiting some of the regional wineries.

In the summer or spring, I recommend going to the Gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle, which is one of the biggest botanical gardens anywhere. Generally, what I like doing most here is eating and drinking and walking around in the beauty of nature. You can find all that close by. There are plenty of options on what to do while staying at Mirror Houses.

The location of Mirror Houses

The Mirror Houses are right outside of Bolzano, South Tyrol, but it feels like we are in the middle of nature. An apple orchard surrounds us with the nearest neighbor about 700 meters away. Within two mins you can get to a supermarket and restaurants. The location is really ideal as it enables you to relax but at the same time it lets you enjoy all of what Bolzano and South Tyrol have to offer.

When is the best time to visit South Tyrol?

I am not exactly attached to one season in particular. Spring is very nice and there are a lot of events happening during May and June. Summer is of course beautiful and in the fall there are chestnuts and wine to be tried. The Christmas markets and of course skiing draw a lot of visitors during the winter months as well.
