— Sabine: “We aimed to create a unique atmosphere with furniture, textiles and canvases that were specifically handcrafted for the space — a magic cocoon for grown-ups and children alike.”
Interview By:

— How would you describe your holiday apartment in a nutshell?

Sabine: “The holiday apartment has an atelier feel to it because of its open plan space with vaulted ceilings that date back to its use as a workshop. Although deeply embedded in a historic building it seems secluded due to the private entrance and peaceful green views. We aimed to create a unique atmosphere with furniture, textiles and canvases that were specifically handcrafted for the space — a magic cocoon for grown-ups and children alike.”

— Please tell us a bit about the history of the building.

Sabine: “It’s an elegant late 19th century twin building. This type of architecture is a rarity in Vienna and characterized by a gated garden through which the two mirroring buldings are accessed. The apartment benefits from this layout as it leads directly off the nicely maintained garden.”

— What was your inspiration to transform it into a holiday apartment and rent it to guests?

Sabine: “I was working as interior architect in London for some years and on my return to Vienna I wanted to find a special place to convert to host visitors. It should also be my refuge to occasionally stay with my son in a central location of the city of Vienna. The idea was to look for an unconventional property with a private entrance and an open plan layout, both of which I found in this atelier.”

— Please tell us a bit about the apartment rental, its facilities and amenities.

Sabine: “The apartment rental has its own glass-sheltered entrance that leads from the garden into the open plan lounge area. At the rear end of this space, a double bed is screened off by a low level wall.

Another separate bedroom has two single beds and can be set up as a double bedroom or children’s room. All practical necessities for babies and toddlers including a selection of toys are provided if needed.

The spacious kitchen opposite the entrance is fully equipped. Just like the generous bathroom and bedroom it faces the quiet back garden. The apartment is kept low tech without a TV although WiFi is provided. It has stone flooring with underfloor heating throughout which makes the space very comfortable in colder months.”

— The textiles are manufactured by your own company and much of the furniture was made specifically for the apartment.

Sabine: “I just launched my own brand which manufactures an exculsive range of home furnishings. It has its own soft-austere aesthetic appealing to grown-ups and designed with kids in mind, featuring hidden details that are there to be discovered on second sight. Everything is handmade in our newly-built workshop in Vienna where we only use the best of organic materials and dye all our fabrics. Of course it was natural to me to furnish the apartment with the products we make and live with.

All tables, stools and benches were commissioned locally and are mostly made of timber that we reclaimed when building our workshop in place of an old attic.”

— To you personally, what is so special about the apartment, what do you love most about it?

Sabine: “I love that it feels so apart from the city although its in a very urban location. The place has a secluded aura because of its private access and the garden views. It feels completely detached from what is going on outside and this is what makes it a relaxing retreat.”
