An introduction to Atelier House

How would you describe Atelier House in a nutshell?

Atelier House is a unique vacation villa on Barbados. It brings a touch of relaxed contemporary chic to an island that sometimes displays a bit of faded glory. Our thinking when conceiving the building was to create a space that echoed a comfortable art gallery that one could live in.

What was your inspiration to rent Atelier House to vacation guests?

We built Atelier House on a virgin piece of land overlooking a stunning mahogany wood with beautiful views to the sea. We always wanted to build a house from scratch and, once we saw this plot, knew it had to be here. The design flowed from the topography of the land and our admiration for South American contemporary modern, the chief exponent of which is, in our view, Marcio Kogan.

We decided to rent it out to discerning vacation guests because we got such an amazing response to it from visitors and wanted to share the experience with others.

To you personally, what is so special about Atelier House?

Atelier has been a labour of love for Amanda and I. Working closely with the architect, we shaped the house we wanted to live in ourselves and, in so doing, have created a landmark building for Barbados.

Visitors are genuinely amazed at the quality of space, light, finish and of course the views. Seeing people really positively affected by the building, by something that we’ve created, is a very special feeling.

To you personally, what has been most rewarding about renting Atelier House to vacation guests?

Without doubt it is the happiness it creates in those that stay. The comments and reviews we get are out of this world. Priceless.

Contemporary tropical modern. The layout is designed to maximize the views from the plot so the shape of the building follows the lines of the boundary. We separated day/living space from night/sleeping space for reasons of practicality — i.e. when the kids are in bed the adults can play without disturbing them!

The interiors use a simple palette of limestone and white painted walls to provide unity in all spaces and allow carefully chosen pieces of art and furniture some space to breathe.
The dimensions of openings, walkways and rooms is intended to provide comfortable mobility such that a guest should never feel pinched for space.

The house is ideal for for kids. There is lots of space with smooth floors and of course there is ample space to play with the terraces and the front and back gardens. Parents should note, however, that the gully edge is a steep drop of 2-3 metres. Regardless, most guests that have stayed at Atelier have had children with them.

Atelier House is best enjoyed as you find it. Do as much or as little as you wish. Hang around the house, swim in the pool, watch the wind in the trees and the boats bobbing by down below.

Stock up with freshly caught fish and salad from the stall down the road and fire up the barbecue for a simple, healthy lunch. Or hire in a chef for a special night — we can arrange this. Most of all, bring friends. Or make them locally. It’s a house that suits friends.

Barbados is not a place to rush, so rather than cram everything in, take your time and visit twice. For us, some of the unmissables would be: A drive across the middle of the island, through mini rain forest, to the east coast. Sunday morning on Crane Beach; order picnic lunch to be delivered to your lounger and leave before the afternoon sun. Dinner on the terrace at Cin Cin by the Sea. Sunset drinks at Ramshackle beach bar — dress down and chill with the very mixed crowd any day of the week. Fish cutters from Cuz’s Fish Shack, next door to the Barbados Yacht Club in Bridgetown — legendary.

The location of Atelier House

The west coast of Barbados has long been highly prized for stunning white beaches, warm lapping waters and glorious sunsets. Just a few hundred meters in from the shoreline the land rises steeply in a series of ridges. Up on these ridges the breeze is cool and the views are magnified.

There are a little grocery store, a fish market and salad stall within 2 mins drive. Local rum shacks too. Supermarkets, designer boutiques, a cinema and many bars can be found in Holetown, 10 mins drive along the coast.

Barbados is a small island so nothing is very far away. The west coast has a restaurant or bar to suit all tastes and budgets. All within 15 mins of the house.

When is the best time to visit West coast?

Some like it hot, some like it cool.

High season, November to April, is when it’s coolest. Most people prefer it then. Personally, I enjoy the summer months when the pool is warm at night and the weather is more dramatic.
